Atlanta Family Photographer

Even though I am an Atlanta Family Photographer, on occasion, I travel to our old stomping grounds in Northern Virginia.  I got together with this precious family while I was in Virginia for my son’s NICU reunion.  My history with Carly (mama) is kind of a fun story.  Around 5 years ago, when Isla (now 5 1/2 years old with long curly hair) was a few months old, I was contacted by a fellow photographer.  She asked me if I’d consider doing a session for a friend of hers whose daughter was about to have open heart surgery.  Carly wanted to get pictures of her before she had a scar on her chest. I, of course, said yes.  We kept in touch, and I was thrilled to be able to catch up with Carly to do maternity pictures.

What to expect at your Atlanta family photographer session

For lots of moms, myself included, just the thought of family photos can cause stress and twitching. Every mother wants that shot..you know the one….the one where every body looks and smiles.  The stress of hoping for THAT picture, is enough to drive a mom crazy!

Tips

Here are my tips to get THAT picture, and so many more, without all the stress…

  • Follow my lead. I do this for a job, and I do it often.
  • I’ll chat with your kids, play games with them, and in the middle of this, I’ll stick you guys together for some more posed shots.  I PROMISE we will not end the session unless I think I’ve gotten what I needed.  I try my best to get a good mix of posed and natural images.
  • Please don’t yell at your kids.  I know family photos are generally not anyone’s favorite thing.  I get it.   If you come stressed out, and yell at your children, it won’t go well.  They can sense your stress, and they’ll be on edge.
  • Feed your kids a heavy snack prior to our session! Kids behave better when their bellies are full.

That’s pretty much it for my tips to success.  The last thing I’d maybe say to do, is pick clothing that you would like to see for your pictures, but that your children will wear without too much fussing. I know my sons, and I know that NONE of them will wear a button down shirt.  It just won’t happen.  If I did make them wear that for pictures, they’d be miserable, and we wouldn’t have nearly the end result that I would hope for. When we did our photos this summer, all 3 of my boys wore a t-shirt.  Granted, it was a plain t-shirt with nothing on it…but they were comfortable!
